Learning how to render a portrait in pencil will be the focus of a six-week study in achieving a likeness of the subject desired as an artist. It might be a grandchild, a friend, a noted figure in movies or television we love. To get to that point, we will learn how to draw the features properly, the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears, within the form of the face in achieving the likeness desired. The face might be a straight on frontal view, a three-quarter view, or profile. Of course, a portrait needs ears, if seen, and knowing how to render the subject’s hair style. Finally, once features and all attributes associated with the subject are rendered, we will learn how to solidify the face with proper shading techniques of all drawn components of the face and head as a whole.
Portraits can be challenging, anything in art can be, but come fully interested and excited to meet those challenges with proper instruction provided by the art teacher, as achievements will come by watching intently, listening, and then implementing on a continuum and not giving up in learning how to become a successful portrait artist.
