Charcoal has been used as an art tool for thousands of years, dating back to at least 30,000 BC. Charcoal is still a medium of choice today and one that offers incredible techniques and use of integrated tools to enhance the beauty of this medium. Students taking this class will find there’s so much more beyond the simplicity of using the medium of charcoal.

Students will learn that one can use watercolor brushes, make-up brushes, and will learn how to make one as well. We will be using a special eraser, powdered charcoal, and using three charcoal pencils, soft, medium, and hard.  All of this will be incorporated in creating various scenes so appropriate for this medium. Various winter studies along a stream, a lake with rugged mountain terrain, birch tree setting off snow covered road as well as other interesting studies that enhance this medium to be more than just a simple, but a challenging acquisition to one’s repertoire of useful mediums.

This project is being supported, in whole or in part, by federal award number FAINSLFR0252, awarded to York County, Pennsylvania, by the Department of the Treasury.
