In this introductory class, students will learn the basics of manual shooting. Topics include ISO, shutter speed, aperture, metering, and lens selection. Emphasis will be placed on the technical working of these things and how they directly affect an image when altered. The class will consist of demonstration, direct instruction, and hands-on exploration. Students should bring a camera with them to class.

  • Introduction: It’s all about the light.
  • Aperture: Students will see a physical aperture move. Brief introduction to optics as it relates to depth of field, focal length, and focus. Students will shoot objects at different lengths and discuss changes in focus within the image.
  • Shutter Speed: The curtain opens! Students will explore shutter speed as it relates to light metering and movement. Examples of shutter speed variations and their use will be discussed. Students will take pictures with movement to explore action.
  • ISO: Amplifying the light. Students will discuss noise, sensor size, and how to amplify light.

Doreen Laskiewicz is a retired music educator turned photographer and Editor-in-Chief of Grit & Goals Magazine, which highlights small businesses and inspiring women. She specializes in portrait, branding, dance, seniors, and lifestyle photography, combining creativity with technical expertise.

Doreen Laskiewicz is a dynamic individual with a rich tapestry of experiences.  Her teaching journey began in the realm of music, where she not only nurtured young minds but also fostered a lover for the arts.  Her later pivot to include STEM subjects allowed her to inspire students in new ways.  Doreen’s wealth of knowledge in education offers a unique perspective on the challenges and triumphs of teaching in diverse subject areas.
